Seminar Overview/Statement of Purpose:

Confronting the challenges of delivering quality patient care in the face of limited budgets and resources is fast becoming a global issue for healthcare practitioners.  Medical professionals in both North America and Africa share these challenges, especially in remote areas where healthcare access and delivery are further limited.  Community healthcare in both places also reflects the emerging need to establish new best practice protocols dealing with the increasing longevity of human populations and the growth of geriatric and palliative care needs. In addition, providing treatment and prevention strategies addressing chronic disease issues such as cardiovascular, obesity, and diabetes are a continuing challenge for both continents. Life expectancy for both males and females in Seychelles is high with non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, asthma and depression being the leading causes of mortality.

Now, more than ever, it is important for medical and dental professionals to collaborate with colleagues and global counterparts to gain cross-cultural perspectives and updates in the treatment and prevention of medical and dental problems. By design, this program offers opportunities for professionals to compare and contrast current best practices to provide quality patient care and outcomes in their own professional setting.

PES Seminar Hosts

Joann and Bill Chaney

Joann and Bill Chaney have assisted in the development and implementation of numerous PES CME/CE Educational Travel Seminar programs. They have escorted more than 30 PES groups throughout the world for itineraries that included ocean cruises, river cruises, and custom land programs. Joann is the Founder of Global Tracks and co-owner of the Professional Education Society (PES). Bill is the Educational Development Specialist for the Professional Education Society and an award-winning professor emeritus at Purdue University in plant physiology.

Aura Hidalgo, DDS

Dr. Aura Hidalgo is a general dentist practicing in London, Ontario. Dr. Hidalgo implements broad skill sets and latest technologies to bring high-quality dental services to her community including orthodontics, tooth removal, fillings, root canals, dental crowns, implants, cosmetic dentistry, teeth cleaning, and whitening. Dr. Hidalgo uses the latest digital technology for her recordkeeping and X-rays. Dr. Hidalgo also provides Invisalign.

John Neumann, DDS

Dr. John Neumann majored in Psychology at the University of Virginia, graduating with his Bachelor’s degree. It was during college, when he experienced a dental emergency of his own, that a new path opened up for him. The experience showed him the possibilities of a career in dentistry, and how he could use this field as a way to help people. After earning his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Neumann began serving his community in private practice. He’s been improving smiles in Winchester, VA for over 40 years.

Continuing Education Recognition Awards offered for healthcare professionals on this PES Program include:

Physicians: Programs are reviewed by the American Academy of Family Physicians for a minimum of 12 Prescribed Credit Hours. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s) toward the AMA Physician Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

Dentists: The Professional Education Society is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.

ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry.

The Professional Education Society designates this activity for a minimum of 12 continuing education credits.

Nurses: The Professional Education Society is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 5428, for up to 12 contact hours. Although the California Board of Registered Nursing does not approve individual continuing education courses, providers are required by law to be approved by the Board. Reciprocity for continuing education hours for nurses is available in most states. Please check with your regulation board regarding requirements.

For Other Healthcare Professionals: Certificates of Attendance are issued to all participants attending credit sessions and can be submitted for credit approval to their professional board. In order to receive a Certificate of Attendance, registrants must sign-in, attend the programs and complete a program evaluation.

Tax Deduction: This healthcare seminar has been designed to comply with current IRS convention rules and deductibility requirements under Code Section 274(h)(1) as directly related to the conduct of the attendee’s profession and meeting the reasonableness standard of the foreign seminar rules. The formal meetings will be scheduled with lectures and discussions. Seminars in conference rooms, clinics or hospitals will be conducted by in-country speakers as well as distinguished faculty of the Professional Education Society.

Documentation verifying the scheduling dates, locations, hours of attendance, certificate of participation, and appropriate certificate of continuing medical, dental or nursing education will be provided at the completion of the conference. Tax deductible benefits are not guaranteed and we recommend that every attendee should consult with their Tax Consultant about their Individual situation to determine the appropriate amount and reporting of deductible expenses.

Port Highlights

Mahé / Victoria, Seychelles

Here, where the luxuriant garden jewels of the Indian Ocean lie and where exotic trees edge beaches of fine white sand, is Mahé. It is a mere 17 miles long and less than five miles wide. Coconut plantations surround its majestic granite peaks which rise to a height of 3,000 feet.

Mahé was uninhabited until the French arrived in 1768, and today this culture remains predominant despite over 180 years of British rule. Although Victoria itself contains somewhat limited attractions, there is a certain quaint charm in the tin roofs and board verandas of its architecture. The true magnificence of the Seychelles lies beyond city limits, as you explore these islands’ stunning natural beauty.

Sainte Anne Island, Seychelles

Seen from afar, St. Anne is a small emerald on a sapphire sea. Coming closer, palm trees shade idyllic sandy beaches and a luxury resort invites drinks and lounging by the pool. Look even closer and you’ll discover cinnamon growing wild on verdant hillsides and sea turtles nosing around their favorite nesting site. Once a commercial whaling outpost and later a World War II gun battery, the island today offers peace and tranquility for people who enjoy the scenery and wildlife that enjoys protection by the St. Anne Marine National Park.

Cousin Island, Seychelles

Cousin Island is a green ink-dot in the Indian Ocean, about one mile from Praslin and a fair distance from anything ordinary in a today’s working world. Here, birds rule the roost. Declared a special reserve in 1975, the island is the last holdout for the Seychelles warbler, a bird driven nearly to extinction with only 26 or so individual birds left in 1959. Today, they number some 3,000, a tribute to conservation. As you might expect from a haven for winged creatures, Cousin Island also is a paradise for nature-loving humans, with dense woodland, a rocky southern coast and sandy beaches encircling almost the entire isle.

Praslin, Seychelles

A small harbor town located on a wide bay, Baie St. Anne is where travelers depart for hops to neighboring islands Mahe, La Digue, Cousin and Curieuse. Yet much can entice visitors to dig their toes in the sand right here in Praslin, the second largest island of Seychelles and arguably tops in attractions. The island shares with its competing Seychelles destinations stunning beaches, azure seas, tangles of jungle and a trademark relaxed atmosphere. What makes Praslin unique is the Vallée de Mai, a protected forest of rare fauna, most famously the coco de mer palm, a tree that produces the world’s largest seed and palm flower. The grove is one of Seychelles’ two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and has been aptly called the Garden of Eden. Also found on Praslin are three of the world’s rarest birds, the Seychelles black parrot, blue pigeon and bulbul. On the other end of the island lies Anse Lazio, considered one of the archipelago’s best beaches.

La Passe, La Digue

The fourth largest island in Seychelles, La Digue is the home to the sleepy tropical port of La Passe, where the only means of transport include bicycles and ox carts. La Digue is a tranquil and relaxed island perfect for snorkeling, diving, hiking and birdwatching.

Laraie Bay, Curieuse Island, Seychelles

The wonders begin the moment you reach the shores of Baie Laraie or Laraie Bay, where hundreds of giant hump-head parrotfish, some nearly four feet long, can be seen in the harbor’s waters. Beyond, the flora is exceptional. Only on this isle and neighboring Praslin do coco de mer palms grow, trees that produce the world’s largest seed and largest palm flower. A boardwalk extends from Baie Laraie to Anse Saint Jose, winding through the island’s mangrove forests to introduce trekkers to fascinating habitat. Low-slung branches of giant takamaka trees reach out over sandy beaches and the very soil of the island, red in color, contrasts with green vegetation. Curieuse Island is known for its giant tortoises. Native to this and other Seychelles islands, the tortoise had once been virtually wiped out. Thanks to a conservation program, the reptiles have been reintroduced to the island. Today, you can see tortoises roaming freely and gathered at the park rangers’ headquarters.

Aride Island, Seychelles

Aride Island may as well be called Bird Island, as it is one of the most important seabird habitats in the Indian Ocean, if not the world. There are more breeding species on Aride than on any other island in Seychelles. Eighteen species of native birds, including five found only in the archipelago, reproduce on this tiny, eyelash of an isle. Indeed, while its bird population is vast, Aride’s size is petite, at only one mile long and under half a mile wide. Its human population is even smaller: only rangers, conservation officers and a few volunteers live here.

All cancellations must be made in writing to Global Tracks. Travel Insurance and Airfare are non-refundable once ticketed.
