Seminar Overview

Healthcare practitioners are currently faced with the challenges of both treating and preventing the ever- increasing incidence of chronic diseases in the US population. In addition, the need to adapt best practice models in the context of emerging healthcare reforms impacting patient care delivery and access to care is an important issue for all healthcare practitioners to address.

France has the highest level of satisfaction with their health care system among all European countries. Healthcare practitioners have adapted best practices strategies in compliance with the French universal healthcare coverage model. Although cardiovascular disease and obesity related diabetes have become significant global health issues, the incidence of these diseases in the French population is among the lowest in the world.

Now, more than ever, it is important for healthcare professionals to collaborate with colleagues and global counterparts to gain cross-cultural perspectives and updates in the treatment and prevention of disease. By design, this program offers opportunities for professionals to compare and contrast current best practices to provide quality patient care and outcomes in their own professional setting.

PES Distinguished Speakers

Fabian Gorodzinsky, MD, FRCPC, AAPD

Seminar Titles: “Communicating with Pediatric Patients: Different Skills for Different Development Stages” and  “Attention Deficit Disorder: Recognition & Strategies for Best Outcomes”

Dr. Gorodzinsky was born in Mexico, where he received an MD in 1974. Dr. Gorodzinsky began training in Israel, and travelled to Toronto before making London, Ontario home.

He has a practice in community pediatrics in London while acting as consultant to the Clinton Public Hospital and the Alexandra and Marine General Hospital in Goderich, Ontario. For over 20 years, Dr. Gorodzinsky has provided excellent clinical teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees in pediatrics. His philosophy is simple – use your natural abilities.

Consistently rated highly by students, Dr. Gorodzinsky continues to receive high praise as a clinical teacher, role model and mentor. Comments include: “In my time with him, he definitely focused a lot more on the importance of communicating skills, the emotional aspects of medicine, and the patient perspective than any other supervisor I have worked with.”

Dr. Gorodzinsky has also contributed beyond Ontario. After Hurricane Mitch caused severe damage to Honduras in 1998, he began annual visits to the country to help children and families affected by the disaster and has encouraged medical trainees to accompany him.

William R. Chaney, PhD

Seminar Titles: “Bark Anatomy and Arboreal Medicinals from Nature’s Pharmacy”

William R. Chaney, PhD is Professor Emeritus of Plant Physiology at Purdue University.  He received a B.S. from Texas A&M University in Plant Sciences, a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in Botany and Plant Physiology, and did a Post-doctorate in Woody Plant Physiology at the University of Wisconsin.

During his 35-year tenure at Purdue University, Dr. Chaney taught courses in environmental science, woody plant physiology, and world forest resources.  He has published more than 250 scientific articles and book chapters that have contributed to the basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of woody plants including co-authorship of the 14-page section on Forestry and Forest Products for the current edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica.  His awards and recognition include two-time recipient of the Abbott Laboratory/Valent Bioscience Award for Plant Growth Regulation Research, Past-president of the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America, and listings in American Men and Women of Science and International Who’s Who of Contemporary Achievement

CONTINUING EDUCATION RECOGNITION AWARDS

Physicians: This program will be reviewed and approved for a minimum of 15 CME Prescribed Credit Hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). AAFP Prescribed Credit is accepted by the AMA as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award.

Dentists: The Professional Education Society is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.

ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. The Professional Education Society designates this activity for a minimum of 15 continuing education credits.

Nurses: The Professional Education Society is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 5428, for a minimum of 15 contact hours. Although the California Board of Registered Nursing does not approve individual continuing education courses, providers are required by law to be approved by the Board. Reciprocity for continuing education hours for nurses is available in most states. Please check with your regulation board regarding requirements.

For Other Healthcare Professionals: Certificates of Attendance are issued to all participants attending credit sessions and can be submitted for credit approval to their professional board. In order to receive a Certificate of Attendance, registrants must sign-in, attend the programs and complete a program evaluation.

Documentation verifying the scheduling dates, locations, hours of attendance, certificate of participation, and appropriate certificate of continuing medical, dental or nursing education will be provided at the completion of the conference. Tax deductible benefits are not guaranteed and we recommend that every attendee should consult with their Tax Consultant.

PORT HIGHLIGHTS

Dover/London, England

The famous White Cliffs of Dover stand guard at the Gateway to England. Millions pass through Dover each year on their journey to or from the continent. In some places over 300 feet high, the White Cliffs are a symbol of the United Kingdom and a reassuring sight to travelers. Renowned for its spectacular white cliffs and historic medieval castle, Dover is also a gateway to such nearby points of interest as Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and famous Leeds Castle. The Cliffs have been immortalized in song, literature and art.

Honfleur, France

Honfleur’s unique character and atmosphere has inspired painters, writers and musicians over the ages. Nestled at the mouth of the Seine River, this small fishing port is renowned for the glorious voyages of discovery by its 17th century mariners, and has blossomed into one of Normandy’s most appealing harbors. Honfleur became a center of artistic activity in the 19th century. Eugène Boudin, the painter of stirring seascapes, was born here in 1824 and artists such as Courbet, Sisley, Pissarro, Renoir and Cèzanne have visited Honfleur.

Preserved from World War II’s destruction, this quaint old Norman town has managed to retain its charm of yesteryear. The “Old Dock,” narrow jetty houses, the museums and monuments are witness to a rich heritage of art and history.

Guernsey/St. Peter Port, Channel Islands

Charming Guernsey, a mere 25 square miles in size, offers a host of enticing visitor attractions. Although geographically closer to France, it has remained staunchly British through the ages. Today, its diverse culture reflects the best of both worlds. Pastel-colored houses rise layer upon layer behind St. Peter Port, the island’s picturesque main town. Beyond, you discover a wealth of activities centering around goldsmiths, silversmiths, wood carvers and clockmakers. St-Malo, France

A walled city on the English Channel, Saint-Malo suffered widespread destruction during the bombings of World War II, but has since been lovingly restored to its 17^th– and 18^th-century splendor. The city’s top destination is the citadel, from where the Corsairs once raided enemy ships in the name of the King.

Today, the city is decidedly more welcoming to visitors, with bustling shops, bars, and hotels within the city walls, not to mention the highest concentration of seafood restaurants in Europe. Although crowds can be quite dense in high season, savvy travelers know to take a stroll atop the ramparts, where they can enjoy 360-degree views away from the hordes.

Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux was at one time France’s richest community and largest port. It is second only to Paris as the country’s most densely populated city. Today it is best-known for its glorious châteaux, mouth-watering cuisine and incomparable wines. It is surrounded by the world’s most famous vineyards including Médoc, St-Emilion, Pomerol, Graves and Sauternes. Crystal’s sojourn in this world-renowned wine capital is bound to please even the most discerning bon vivant.

St-Jean-de-Luz, France

This fishing port on the Basque coast is a gem, sparkling with old-world charm. Venture into the town center and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back into the Middle Ages, as historic Basque and its Moorish architecture presides over narrow, cobblestone lanes. There’s plenty to explore, from the lively bars and restaurants in the main square to the casino and shops that give the town a more modern touch. It’s also home to the Church of St. John, where Louis XIV married Marie Thérèse of Spain. Incidentally, it was at that wedding that the legendary pastry chef Adam delighted guests with Basque macarons, a heartier cousin to the traditional French macaron; a visit to Saint Jean-de-Luz would not be complete without sampling this tasty confection.

Bilbao, Spain

Home of the newly-erected Guggenheim Museum, this bustling city epitomizes the merger of modernity and history. The gateway to the Cantabrico Sea from the plateau of Castilla, Bilbao has flourished from the middle ages as a busy port, and a major exporter of the metals found in surrounding areas. Today, the city flourishes with a vital exuberance, as modern architects erect new buildings next to 19th-century structures.

Lisbon, Portugal

Cosmopolitan Lisbon was the center of the world’s last great colonial empire. Today the city nostalgically reveres its imperial past while adapting to Portugal’s role as a member of the European Economic Community. Although located on the Atlantic coast, Lisbon has the soul of a Mediterranean city with Moorish castles, pastel and white buildings, orange-tiled roofs and luminous blue skies. Set amid the hills and valleys of the northern shore of the River Tagus, it is one of the loveliest capitals in the world.

Penalties apply to the total package per person price which could include: cruise, pre/post packages, seminar fees, and extra services. Airfare is non-refundable once purchased.
